Round 1 of the Surrey Twenty20 took the Ruts down the A3 to Weybridge. A handful of changes were made to the original team with Butler and Zed out with Flanners and Kash in. Little did we know until Sal got to the ground but Snelly couldn’t play either, confusion in the ruts ranks? In comes the ever reliable Jonesy to make up our numbers.
The ruts arrive in dribs and drabs only to notice a couple of Weybridge players in the nets, one of them seeming to be a certain Jimmy Ormond, former England test international.
Sal wins the toss and elects to bat first. So into the changing room we go and Kash gets onto wikipedia, Ormond’s test wickets, Ponting and Dravid! Lovely!
Prycey and Richard open up with Ormond taking the new ball and making Prycey play and miss at a few until a clip over mid wicket for four. Rich then goes on the offensive with a couple of big hits down the ground for four until he departs for 11. Sonny replaces him and begins knocking the singles around with Prycey starting to get going until he miscues a pull straight to mid on and the ruts are around 30-2. Sal and Sonny bat sensibly to take the ruts to 70-2 off 10 with Sonny beginning to look imperious. Sal departs, bowled for around 25 with Mappy coming in under instruction from Daisy to ‘go big’. Sonny opens up his shoulders and does just that with Mappy hitting an on drive over the top for four. Both take the score to 110-3 off 16 before Mappy is run out try to take a quick single. Flanners comes in to support Sooper Cooper as he reaches his half century with a one bounce four over mid-on (having been dropped on a number of occasions). Sonny is eventually caught at cow corner for 60 odd with Kash replacing him to be the non striker for the last ball dash. Ruts end on 138-5.
Ruts open up with Half Pryce, knowing that we are going to have to be flawless with the ball and in the field to stand a chance of winning. The first over goes for 12 and heads begin to drop. The Weybridge openers were batting well, not giving the Ruts any chances yet still going at 10 an over during the power play 6. Weybridge continued to press taking the quick singles and punishing the four balls. The ruts only wicket came when Weybridge were on 100 with Sal getting one caught by Evan at mid wicket. Weybridge then continued to knock off the remaining runs in the 15th over.
The ruts ground fielding was solid although the difference in divisions did show with Weybridge being slightly quicker onto the ball in the field. Overall a good performance from everyone who played. _________________ welcome to the gun show.. |

Mappy thanks for that.
Just a few points to add. Weybridge are a class act. However i believe everyone that played for the Ruts yesterday can hold their heads up high. the margin of 9 wickets may look as if it was a walk in the park for Weybridge, however it was anything but.
Positives yesterday were:
Sonny taking on better bowlers and at times playing a watchful innings rather than going all out. Also chipping into the outfield and running hard for 2 was a major positive and intelligent batting.
Mappy's cameo shows he can hack it at this level, and hopefully will be a boost of confidence to him. Mappy you need to be playing 2s each week and if you have to, then stress it to Lance, i will certainly do so.
Liam working the ball in the gaps and scampering 2s.
Barney has really come back this season, and it won't be long before he is in the 1s in this bowling form.
Evan after his hiccup vs Old Emanuel, bowled a good full length and most importantly was trying to turn the ball.
Jamie had an off day, but his form in the 2 league games has been outstanding and is generating some serious pace.
Things to build on
Fielding and anticipation. We don't attack the ball in the field, which allows oppo to convert 1s to 2s. The only person that did do that yesterday was Liam. after his 1st ball slip up at 3rd man, really attacked the ball and stopped the 1s being converted to 2s.
It was a big ground yesterday, therefore it was important to cover the angles. Often this can be done by coming in 5 or10 off the boundary. Shot anticipation by judging the length and seeing if the batsman will be looking to pull or cut, especially of the short crap i was bowling :)
Batting wise, we need to be more savy in our running. In 20/20 it is important to pick 1s of nearly every ball. It can be the difference between 137 and 160. a drive to mid on or mid off should result in 1. the fielder has to pick up and throw directly to effect a run out. 8 times out of 10 he will either fumble or miss the stumps, so % is in the batsmans favour.
Overall, really proud of the effort put in by the youngsters and lets ensure this experience helps us for the remainder of the season. |

Mappy went big - woohoo!! Tell you what Mappy, if we allow you into the 2's I'll even ensure that you bat just behind me - now what more could you ask for!!
Good effort guys - was always going to be an uphill task.
